Brighton Are Going to Europe: How the Seagulls Qualified for the Conference League Despite Losing 3-0

Brighton and Hove Albion are going to Europe. Not the way they hoped, and not after the afternoon they had against Manchester United on Sunday, but they are going. Brighton finished the 2025/26 Premier League season in 8th place and will play in the UEFA Conference League in 2026/27, making it the second time in the club's history that European football is coming to the Amex Stadium.

The result against Manchester United was 3-0. Brighton were outclassed at home on the final day of the season. But results elsewhere on Sunday afternoon meant that it did not matter. Brighton qualified for European football despite losing, and despite not even knowing for certain they were in Europe until the final whistle went across the country.

This is the full story of how it happened, why it matters and what comes next for Brighton and Hove Albion.

Brighton 0-3 Manchester United: What Happened at the Amex

Brighton started the day with genuine hope of reaching the Europa League, and a mathematical chance, however slim, of Champions League football if the results fell their way. They needed to win. They did not win.

Patrick Dorgu opened the scoring for Manchester United in the 33rd minute after being set up by Bruno Fernandes. That assist moved Fernandes clear of Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry to become the all-time Premier League assist record holder with 21 in a single season. Bryan Mbeumo doubled United's lead in the 44th minute. The half time whistle was greeted with boos from some parts of the Amex.

Fabian Hurzeler responded to the first half performance by introducing Yankuba Minteh for Maxime De Cuyper at the start of the second half. It made no difference. Three minutes into the second half, Fernandes scored United's third after being slipped in again by Dorgu. VAR checked the goal for offside before confirming it. At 3-0 the game was finished as a contest.

Bart Verbruggen made smart saves to deny Dorgu a second and push away a powerful shot from Amad Diallo. Substitute Solly March stung the palms of United goalkeeper Senne Lammens. But Brighton never really looked like scoring three times and the afternoon ended in a comfortable 3-0 defeat in front of their own supporters.

Brighton had 51 per cent possession, 13 shots and 2 on target across the full 90 minutes. Manchester United had 10 shots and 7 on target. Brighton committed 11 fouls to United's 8. One United player was booked. Brighton received no yellow cards.

How Brighton Still Qualified for Europe

While Brighton were losing at the Amex, the results across the rest of the Premier League were deciding their fate. Here is exactly what happened and why Brighton ended the day in Europe despite losing 3-0.

Brighton started Sunday in 7th place. The team finishing 8th in the Premier League this season qualified for the Conference League because of the way the European places were distributed across the division. Manchester City won the FA Cup, which normally carries a Europa League place, but City did not need that Europa League spot because they qualified for the Champions League through their league position. That FA Cup Europa League place therefore moved down to the highest-placed team in the league who had not already qualified for Europe.

Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 on Sunday, finishing 5th in the final Premier League table. That Villa result meant the 5th place European Performance Spot in the Champions League did not apply, which meant the Europa League places went to 6th and 7th, and the Conference League place went to 8th. Brighton finished 8th.

Bournemouth drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest to finish 6th and claim a Europa League place. Sunderland finished 7th and also qualified for the Europa League. Brighton finished 8th and qualified for the Conference League. Chelsea finished 9th and missed out on European football entirely despite starting the day with a realistic chance of qualifying.

The Final Premier League Table

Arsenal finished 1st with 85 points. Manchester City 2nd with 78. Manchester United 3rd with 71. Aston Villa 4th with 65. Liverpool 5th with 60. Bournemouth 6th with 57 points and Europa League football. Sunderland 7th with 54 points and Europa League football. Brighton 8th with 53 points and Conference League football. Brentford 9th also on 53 points. Chelsea 10th on 52 points and no European football.

One point separated Brighton from Brentford in 9th. Two points separated Brighton from Sunderland in 7th and the Europa League. Three points separated Brighton from Bournemouth in 6th. It was the tightest cluster in the middle of the table in recent Premier League history and every single result in the final weeks of the season mattered.

Fabian Hurzeler Speaks

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler was honest about how he felt after the match. He described it as a strange feeling, losing 3-0 at home on the final day while simultaneously qualifying for European football through results elsewhere.

"It was a strange feeling. We didn't play well and it was the worst time for this performance. I was quite disappointed. I was expecting more from us as a team," Hurzeler said.

"You have to make the best out of it and in the end the best was the results from the other games. We have to be grateful for that. It is the second time we have qualified for European football and that is always something special. We wanted to make the next step and that was one of our goals for this season, luckily we reached it. When you are in the situation we had before the game you want more but we have to accept it."

Hurzeler also said his side should be proud of what they achieved across the season. Brighton won 14 Premier League games this season, lost 13 and drew 11. They beat Chelsea 3-0 at the Amex in April, beat Liverpool 2-1 at home in March and drew 2-2 at Tottenham. They beat Burnley and Sunderland away from home. The final day defeat was the latest in a difficult run of final games that has become a feature of Brighton's recent seasons.

Pascal Gross Reacts

Pascal Gross, Brighton's German midfielder and one of the most experienced members of the squad, also spoke after the match. He acknowledged the result was not what anyone at the club wanted but said qualifying for European football for the second time in the club's history is something the whole club should be proud of.

Brighton's History With European Football

The first time Brighton qualified for Europe was under Roberto De Zerbi in 2022/23, when they finished 6th in the Premier League. They competed in the UEFA Europa League that season, reaching the Round of 16 before being eliminated by Roma 4-1 on aggregate. That was the first time in the club's entire history that they had played European football.

Now, under Fabian Hurzeler in his first full season in charge, they have done it again. This time it is the Conference League rather than the Europa League, but European football is European football and for a club that was on the brink of relegation to the non-league in 1997, qualifying for Europe twice in three years is a story that was impossible to imagine a generation ago.

The Conference League league phase begins on 15 October 2026. Brighton will learn their opponents during the summer draw.

What the Conference League Means Financially

Competing in the UEFA Conference League brings significant financial rewards for Brighton. Prize money from UEFA for participating in the group/league phase alone runs into millions of euros, before any prize money for advancing through the rounds is added. Commercial opportunities, matchday revenue from European home games at the Amex and increased global exposure all add to the financial picture.

For a club that operates on careful financial management and relies heavily on its recruitment model to compete with clubs with significantly larger budgets, the additional revenue from European football is meaningful in the context of what Brighton can do in the summer transfer window.

What Happens Next

The transfer window opens on 15 June 2026 and closes on 31 August 2026. Brighton's squad will need strengthening in several areas if they are to compete in both the Premier League and the Conference League next season. Playing in two competitions simultaneously adds significant fixture congestion and demands greater squad depth than competing in the league alone.

The 2026/27 Premier League season begins on 22 August 2026. The fixtures for next season will be released on 19 June 2026. The Conference League league phase begins on 15 October 2026.

Fabian Hurzeler remains in charge and has a contract running until 2027. He said at his very first press conference when he joined Brighton that he wanted to challenge the establishment and achieve big things with the club. European football in back to back seasons is a start. Brighton are not done yet.
