Women of Colour Brighton UK are hosting a candlelit vigil at Black Rock Beach on Sunday 24 May at 8pm to honour the lives of Jane, Christina and Rebecca.

This Sunday evening at 8pm, people will gather at Black Rock Beach in Brighton to light candles and remember three sisters.

Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, were found in the sea near Madeira Drive in the early hours of Wednesday 13 May. They had travelled to Brighton together from the Uxbridge area of London. They did not come home.

The vigil has been organised by Women of Colour Brighton UK. It takes place at Black Rock Beach, the stretch of shoreline near Brighton Marina where the three women were found, at 8pm on Sunday 24 May.

"We gather in grief, remembrance, solidarity and love," the organisers wrote. "Join us as we hold space for Black women, women of colour sisterhood, for mourning, for collective healing and for the guidance of ancestral wisdom. Come in peace. Come in community. Come to remember. Come with love."

Attendees are asked to bring candles, flowers, instruments and drums.

What Happened

Emergency services were called to the seafront at around 5.45am on 13 May after concerns were raised about a person in the water near Madeira Drive. Three bodies were pulled from the sea near Black Rock car park, close to Brighton Marina.

Sussex Police formally identified the three women on 20 May as Jane Adetoro, aged 36, Christina Walters, aged 32, and Rebecca Walters, aged 31. All three were sisters. All three were from the Uxbridge area of London.

Detectives have reviewed hundreds of hours of CCTV footage and carried out house to house and business visits across the beach area to try to trace the sisters' last movements. Sussex Police are asking anyone who saw Jane, Christina or Rebecca near Madeira Drive between 10pm on Tuesday 12 May and 5.30am on Wednesday 13 May to come forward.

The investigation remains ongoing. Sussex Police have said there is no evidence of third-party involvement or criminality. They continue to work to establish the full facts and circumstances surrounding the deaths of all three sisters.

Their Father's Words

Joseph, the sisters' father, released a statement through Sussex Police following the formal identification of his daughters. He described the grief as at times unbearable but said he holds onto the memories they shared together and the bond between them that he said death can never take away.

He described Jane, Christina and Becky as his joy, his strength and the beautiful light that filled the family with happiness and love. He said each of them was unique and precious in her own way. That their smiles brightened dark days. That their laughter brought comfort. That their presence made life more meaningful.

He spoke of each daughter individually. Jane's strength. Christina's kindness. Rebecca's joyful spirit.

He closed with these words: "Though you are no longer here beside us, your spirits live on in our hearts every day. Love like yours never dies. You will forever remain a part of our lives, our prayers, and our memories. Rest peacefully, my precious daughters. You may be gone from our sight, but never from our hearts. Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever remembered."

Sussex Police Statement

Chief Superintendent Adam Hays, Divisional Commander for Brighton and Hove, said the thoughts of everyone at Sussex Police are with the family following what he described as a devastating loss.

"I know this incident has had a profound impact on the local community in Brighton, and across the country," he said. "I would like to reassure the public we will leave no stone unturned in our investigation to understand exactly what led to the tragic events of that Wednesday morning. This investigation will continue in earnest, with Jane, Christina and Rebecca's family at its centre. I would ask that they are given the privacy to come to terms with this terrible tragedy."

A GoFundMe page has been launched to help cover the funeral costs for the three sisters, with a target of £18,000. It was set up to give Jane, Christina and Rebecca the loving and dignified farewell they deserve. You can find it by searching their names on GoFundMe.
