A new barbershop is opening its doors on Dyke Road this week, and it comes with a simple promise: everyone walks out happy, whoever they are. Dyke Barbershop opens on Friday 4 September at 214 Dyke Road, bringing a proper local cut to a corner of Brighton the owner reckons has been crying out for one.
Behind the chairs is a barber who has spent seven years learning the trade, starting young, and is now opening his very first business. After moving to Brighton five years ago and falling for the city, he decided this was where he wanted to set up on his own.
"I moved to Brighton five years ago and I love everything about it. The people are so lovely, and everything about Brighton makes me happy, so I thought this is where I should be."

A chair for everyone
The idea behind the shop is that anyone can walk in and feel welcome, not just men, not just women, but everyone. It is a friendly, inclusive spin on the traditional barbershop, with four chairs to start, and a focus on making sure every customer leaves happy.
"I'm trying to make sure everyone can walk into the barbershop, not just a man or just a woman. I want everyone to be happy when they walk out. We've got four chairs in the shop so far."
The shop has also launched its own range of grooming products, from styling powder, curl cream and hair wax to sea salt spray and colognes, all under the Dyke Barbershop name.

Opening day and launch offer
Dyke Barbershop opens on Friday 4 September, and everyone is welcome, customers and curious passers-by alike. To mark the occasion, there is a free coffee for anyone who pops in on the day, plus 20 percent off on opening day.

For now the shop is walk-ins only, with a booking system on the way. It will be open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 7pm, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

Why Dyke Road
The location was a deliberate choice. The owner points to easy parking all around, including 20 minutes free at the Tesco petrol station right opposite, and reckons there is a real gap in the area, with no barbershop nearby and locals otherwise having to head into town for a haircut.
"The location is great. There's parking all around it, so no parking issues, and 20 minutes free parking at the Tesco petrol station right opposite us. There's no competition in the area and I've seen that the local people need a barbershop close by, so there's no need to go into town for a haircut."
What's next
For now the focus is on opening the doors and building a happy local following. Looking ahead, the plan is to expand the offer to include women's hair too, keeping to that same idea of a barbershop where everyone feels at home.
"We'd love to make people happy and get everyone happy to come in, and to be able to serve women's hair in the future."
