The Met Office has put Brighton and Hove under a yellow warning for rain today, Saturday 24 October, as Storm Boelo moves across the UK. The warning runs from 11am to 11pm and covers Brighton and Hove, East and West Sussex and the rest of the South East.

Warning. Yellow, rain, issued by the Met Office at 9.05am on Saturday 24 October 2026.

When. 11am to 11pm today.

Where. Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, West Sussex, Kent, Surrey, Hampshire, Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight, plus parts of the South West, Wales, the North West and North Yorkshire.

Why. The Met Office says heavy rain brings a high likelihood of moderate impacts from surface water flooding.

What the Met Office expects

Its warning details say 25 to 30mm of rain is expected widely across the warning area, with a few upland places seeing 50 to 60mm, and some of it possibly falling within six hours. Rain should ease for a time through the evening, then a second intense band moves in from the west before the whole system clears eastwards to leave a clear night with a few scattered showers.

For people in the warning area, the Met Office lists these likely effects:

Roads. Spray and flooding on roads, probably making journey times longer.

Buses and trains. Services probably affected, with journeys taking longer.

Power. Some interruption to power supplies and other services is likely.

Homes and businesses. Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible.

How windy will it get in Brighton?

There is no wind warning for Sussex, but it will be blustery. The Met Office’s hourly forecast for Brighton has gusts of 38mph at 1pm rising to 53mph at 9pm and 10pm, with the wind coming from the south west.

The strongest winds from Storm Boelo are aimed further north. The Met Office has amber wind warnings for Scotland, northern England and parts of Northern Ireland, with gusts of 60 to 70mph widely and up to 80mph on exposed coasts there.

Tonight, Sunday and the week ahead

The Met Office’s South East forecast says tonight starts wet with strong, gusty winds, then clear spells develop later with showers mainly in the west. The minimum is 8C.

Sunday brings sunny spells for most, perhaps one or two showers in the west, and it stays windy, especially along the coast where gales are possible. The maximum is 13C.

Monday and Tuesday bring bands of rain, followed by sunny spells and showers in places, and a drier, more settled Wednesday. A separate yellow wind warning for Tuesday covers Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland, not Sussex.

Clocks also go back an hour at 2am on Sunday, so there is an extra hour in bed, as the government clock change page confirms.

What to do before you head out

The Met Office tells people to check road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, and change travel plans if needed. It also suggests gathering torches, batteries and a phone power pack in case of power cuts, and checking whether your property could be at risk of flooding. Its guides cover staying safe in heavy rain, travelling in storms, rain and wind and protecting your property from flooding.

The Environment Agency’s flood warnings service shows any flood alerts for your area.

Second storm in a week

This comes days after Storm Austen brought a yellow wind warning to Sussex, and after a section of Brighton’s West Pier fell into the sea. Warnings can change quickly, so check the Met Office page before you travel.
