Free bus travel for children across Brighton and Hove this August

Thousands of children across Brighton and Hove can travel by bus for free this month. Brighton and Hove City Council has welcomed new Government funding that gives under-16s free bus travel throughout August, helping families save money and make the most of the summer holidays.

The offer runs from Saturday 1 August to Monday 31 August and applies right across England. It is part of the Government's Great British Summer Savings scheme, which is also cutting the cost of days out for families over the school break.

Which buses does it cover?

The free travel is available on all the city's bus operators, including Brighton and Hove Buses, Compass Travel and Stagecoach. There is no pass to apply for and no registration needed, children simply travel for free on most local buses across the city and the wider country throughout the month.

The council's existing free travel offer also remains in place for 16 to 18 year olds travelling with a full fare-paying adult.

Getting out and about for less

The council says removing travel costs will help more young people enjoy their summer holidays while encouraging families to visit the seafront, parks, leisure facilities, cultural venues and independent businesses, giving a welcome boost to the local economy over the summer.

"Our buses connect families to everything our city has to offer, from beaches and parks to sports activities, libraries, museums and community events. Removing travel costs will help more young people enjoy their summer holidays and make a positive difference for families during what can be an expensive time of year."

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure

Part of a wider summer savings scheme

The free bus travel sits alongside a broader Government package aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures on families during the school holidays. Great British Summer Savings has cut VAT on children's meals at restaurants, on children's cinema and theatre tickets, and on tickets for everyone at attractions like soft play, adventure centres and theme parks. A national £2 cap on single bus fares also applies.

The Government has also created an interactive tool that lets families enter their postcode to find the nearest discounts, from restaurants and theatres to museums and attractions taking part across the country.
