A murder trial has been scheduled over the death of a man in a Regency Square property in Brighton, The Argus reported on Monday 26 October.

Tio Day, 37, died in the early hours of Sunday 26 April 2026 after a fight at a property in the square. Daniel Bassett, 26, of no fixed address, is charged with his murder and with the attempted murder of a second man. He has not been convicted of any offence.

What happened in Regency Square

Sussex Police said emergency services were called to a fight inside a property in Regency Square at about 2.10am on Sunday 26 April. Two men were found with stab injuries.

A 37-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, and his family were informed. A man in his 30s was taken to hospital in a serious condition. He has since been released from hospital, ITV reported.

Officers arrested a 26-year-old man of no fixed address at a nearby location on suspicion of murder. Police said they did not believe there was a wider risk to the public, and said there would be more officers in and around Regency Square while the investigation continued.

Where this is

Regency Square sits on the Brighton seafront, between Western Road and King’s Road, close to the site of the West Pier. Police have not said which address the incident took place at in their public statements.

Who is charged and what happens next

Mr Bassett was charged on Tuesday 28 April with murder and attempted murder. He was remanded in custody, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 29 April, and then before the Crown Court on Friday 1 May.

At that hearing Judge Christine Laing, the honorary recorder of Brighton and Hove, set a provisional trial date of Monday 5 October, which was expected to last two to three weeks. Mr Bassett was due to enter a plea on Friday 24 July.

The Argus reported that a trial has now been scheduled. The new trial date will be added here once it is published.

Remembering Tio Day

Mr Day was remembered by his family as “precious, curious and full of love”. Members of the Brighton community described him as kind, intelligent and warm.

His inquest was opened on 7 May by the assistant coroner, Joanne Andrews, at Woodvale Coroners Court. She ruled the death unnatural and suspended the inquest until the criminal case has finished, so no findings have been made.

ImJustBrighton note. An inquest does not decide who is responsible for a death. It is held to establish who died and how, when and where they died.

What Sussex Police have said

Temporary Chief Superintendent Adam Hays said the force’s thoughts were with Tio’s family and friends. Police said they would keep working to tackle knife crime, and the incident was given the name Operation Wenthill.

If you have any information, report it to Sussex Police online or call 101, quoting Operation Wenthill. In an emergency, call 999.
