Ten independent businesses around Seven Dials in Brighton are opening their doors for a free Halloween trail on Saturday 31 October, from 3pm to 6pm. There will be sweets, games, face painting, a Halloween disco and tarot readings, and everyone is invited to come in costume.

The Seven Dials Trick or Treat Halloween Trail has been organised by the local businesses themselves. The organisers’ flyer says it starts at Hi Cacti on Dyke Road, so that is the place to head first, bucket in hand. The flyer also promises costume contests, a colouring station, autumnal drinks and a Day of the Dead altar along the way.

Seven Dials takes its name from the junction where seven roads meet on the high ground just north-west of Brighton station, about a kilometre north of the seafront. Most of the trail is on Dyke Road, just south of the roundabout.

The ten stops

Here is every business on the trail and what each one has planned. The numbers match the map further down.

What is on at each stop

1. No.64, 64 Dyke Road. The gift, jewellery and homeware shop opened on 1 October and is hosting trick or treat and spooky skeletons. It is open every weekend in October. We covered the opening in our earlier feature, and its first Christmas guide is here.

2. Hi Cacti, 83 Dyke Road. A colourful shop and coffee spot that began with cacti and easy-care houseplants. It is the start of the trail and is building a Day of the Dead community altar, a colourful and meaningful way to remember the people we love.

3. Dressmith, 77 Dyke Road. The fashion label, which opened its Brighton store in 2021, is dressing its window for Halloween with artwork by pupils from Brighton Girls School. Its website sells women’s and men’s clothing and accessories, plus art, ceramics and homeware.

4. Teddy Edwards, 85 Dyke Road. The barbershop is handing out sweets, and no haircut is required.

5. Peach & Ember. This stop has a spooky ghost hunt for brave young investigators.

6. The Cow, 95-97 Dyke Road. The pub is running games and a colouring competition.

7. T @ The Dials, 109C Dyke Road. The café is offering face painting for all ages.

8. Pearson Keehan Estate Agents, 111 Dyke Road. Expect a Disney Villains Halloween disco, plus a colouring competition and spooky games.

9. Puck, 19 Chatham Place. The coffee shop beside the Dials, which also has a tiny record shop upstairs, is holding a pumpkin lantern competition. It is announced at 5.30pm.

10. Reach Physiotherapy, 101 Dyke Road. Tarot card readings run from 4pm to 6pm for anyone curious about what the future holds.

Where the trail is

The stops on the map are within about 200 metres of each other, mostly along Dyke Road, so the trail is an easy wander. Puck is on Chatham Place, on the other side of the Seven Dials roundabout.
