Wednesday night at the Etihad
The Carabao Cup fourth-round tie finished Manchester City 2, Albion 2 on Wednesday 28 October, and City won the shoot-out 4-3, according to the club’s match report. Malick Yalcouye gave Albion the lead after 30 minutes. Matteo Kovacic levelled before half-time and Georginio Rutter put Albion back in front soon after the restart. City drew level again after 72 minutes with a free-kick that deflected in.
There were no more goals in 90 minutes and the tie went to penalties. Albion goalkeeper Jason Steele saved Kovacic’s penalty, but City goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved efforts from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk. Yankuba Minteh came on as a substitute after 76 minutes.
Head coach Fabian Hurzeler told the club afterwards that losing a penalty shoot-out is always 50-50 but is still a brutal feeling, and that the sides meet again in three days.
